What does a home mean to you? Whether it’s simply the place you live or the people you call family, home is a concept that we can all relate to, even as it evolves in our minds and hearts.

The University of West Georgia Theatre Company presents heartwarming plays and musicals that explore what it means to be “home.” The “Home is Where the Heart Is” season kicks off in September with “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” by Simon Stephens, based on the young adult novel by Mark Haddon. An exploration of the mind of a neurodivergent teenager, the five-time Tony Award and six-time Olivier Award winning play is a poignant and funny tale of acceptance and love. Performances will be held at the Townsend Center Mainstage Theater from Sept. 30 – Oct. 3, at 7:30 p.m., and on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 2:30 p.m.

In November, UWG’s student-devised musical, “Songs & Stories: A Cabaret,” will explore the various ideas of home both theatrically and musically. “Songs & Stories: A Cabaret” will run at the Townsend Center Dangle Theater from Nov. 11-14, at 7:30 p.m., and on Sunday, Nov. 15, at 2:30 p.m.

Next will be the satirical “Ain’t No Mo’” by Jordan E. Cooper, which explores the challenges of home with biting satire and will be presented in the Townsend Center Dangle Theater from March 3-6, 2027, at 7:30 p.m., and on Sunday, March 7, 2027, at 2:30 p.m. Please be aware that “Ain’t No Mo’” contains strong language and themes of race, identity and injustice.

To wrap up the season in April 2027, there will be a performance of Stephen Sondheim’s classic musical “Into the Woods.” This classic runs from April 21-24, 2027, at 7:30 p.m., and on Sunday, April 25, 2027, at 2:30 p.m. in the Townsend Center Mainstage Theater.

UWG Theatre’s “Home is Where the Heart Is” season will bring joy and laughter while also asking us to consider how we think about home and who we include in our homes. As we grow from infancy to adulthood, our idea of home often changes. In the two plays and two musicals in the “Home is Where the Heart is” season, these ideas of home are explored to their fullest. The characters and situations in each of these productions will charm, befuddle and amuse the audiences.

Tickets for all UWG productions are $15 for the general public, $10 for seniors and $5 for students with a school ID. All productions will have a community preview the Tuesday before each opening night. Tickets will be discounted to the public for the community previews.
