West Georgia Technical College (WGTC) has named Tyice D. Mills as Program Director of its Funeral Service Education program. With more than 22 years of experience as a licensed funeral director and embalmer, Mills brings a career rooted in service, compassion, and education. A Detroit native, she has devoted her professional life to supporting families and preparing the next generation of funeral service professionals.

Mills holds a bachelor’s degree in American English, language and literature from Eastern Michigan University and an associate degree in funeral service from Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service. She later earned a master’s degree in higher education, with a focus on teaching and learning, from Walden University.

For the past seven years, Mills has focused on shaping future professionals through higher education leadership and instruction. She served five years as a program director and instructor in funeral service education, mentoring students with real-world insight and a teaching style that balances rigor with care. Most recently, she taught elementary students in grades K–5, bringing creativity, structure, and a student-centered approach to the classroom.

Beginning in January 2026 at WGTC’s Murphy Campus in Waco, the Funeral Service Education program is designed to meet a growing workforce need while preparing graduates to serve families and communities with professionalism and care. The Associate of Applied Science program blends technical training in mortuary science, restorative art, and funeral home operations with instruction in bereavement care, legal compliance, ethics, and business management, ensuring graduates are well-prepared to meet industry standards and community expectations.

As program director, Mills will lead the development and delivery of the program, guiding students through comprehensive coursework and hands-on training while fostering the interpersonal skills necessary to support families with dignity during times of loss.

“We are thrilled to welcome Ms. Mills, a leader whose compassion, expertise and vision will shape a program that truly elevates the profession and the students who will carry it forward,” said Dr. Phyllis Ingham, Dean of Health Sciences. “Her commitment to service and education reflects the very heart of our mission, and we are confident that her presence will inspire excellence, purpose and a culture of care as we launch this transformative new program at WGTC.”
