The National Down Syndrome Congress named Berry College’s program for individuals with intellectual disabilities the “Rookie of the Year" at the recent Big Game Ball.
Berry’s Inclusive Postsecondary Education (IPSE) program is in its second year.
“Our first year was amazing, surpassing expectations. We saw so much growth of our IPSE students academically and socially, but particularly in their confidence and skills related to their jobs,” said Michelle Haney, Henry Gund Professor of Psychology and Director of the program. “The student mentors reported that their experience working and becoming involved in the IPSE program was life-changing. Our students will model what inclusion can look like in their own communities, post Berry – which is the dream!”
“Mr. College Football,” Tony Barnhart, and his wife, Maria Barnhart, serve as the event co-chairs along with Bob Hope, founder and Chairman of Hope Beckham Espinosa. The Big Game Ball, held at the Chick-fil-A College Football Hall of Fame, celebrates those who have made significant contributions to developing and enhancing inclusive postsecondary education programs for students with intellectual disabilities.
The honorees of the Big Ball game exemplify the priorities of the National Down Syndrome Congress that lead to meaningful employment, independent living and improved quality of life for people with Down syndrome.
Berry’s program is designed for highly motivated individuals ages 18-26 with an intellectual disability who aim to continue learning and acquiring skills to fully engage in their communities. Students are provided a two-year college experience working toward personal goals that build academic skills, vocational development and interpersonal growth.
They take part in all aspects of campus life, including leadership building, social and recreational activities, student clubs and interest groups, volunteer and religious events, and cultural events.
Applications for the 2026-27 academic year are open and available at https://www.berry.edu/academics/ipse/.
