Historic Heard County Newspapers Now Digitized and Searchable Online
Tuesday, May 6th, 2025
The oldest and most significant newspaper in Heard County, Georgia, News and Banner, from years 1895-1954, is now digitized and fully searchable online through the Georgia Historic Newspapers portal.
Getting the content of the newspaper online was the result of a cooperative effort between the Heard County Historical Society, the University of West Georgia Ingram Library, and the current publisher of the newspaper to assemble a consecutive run of the News and Banner issues. The costs of digitization were generously provided by the Georgia Public Library Service.
In addition to the News and Banner (1894-1954), viewers can also access the preceding title, Franklin News and Banner (1894 - 1906), and stray issues of Heard County Citizen from 1906.
“The News and Banner is the legal organ for Heard County, and is rich with agricultural, business and social news of the region,” said Blynne Olivieri Parker, dean of UWG Ingram Library. “Making this content available to the public and fully searchable will be valuable to genealogists, historians and others who seek information about the people and culture of West Georgia,”
The newspapers can be found through the Georgia Historic Newspaper portal.
