Report Grades Georgia's Efforts to Reduce Tobacco Use

On Wednesday, January 29, the American Lung Association will release the 23rd annual “State of Tobacco Control” report. Access to the embargoed report and embargoed interviews are available upon request.

WHAT: The American Lung Association’s 23rd annual “State of Tobacco Control” report evaluates Georgia’ efforts to eliminate tobacco use and save lives with proven-effective tobacco control laws and policies. The report grades five areas: funding for state tobacco prevention programs, state tobacco taxes, smokefree workplace laws, coverage of and access to quit tobacco treatments, and ending the sale of flavored tobacco products. 

WHEN: The embargo on the 2025 “State of Tobacco Control” report lifts on Wednesday,January 29 at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time

WHERE: New findings from the “State of Tobacco Control” report for Georgia will be live on Lung.org/sotc following the launch. 

WHO: Interviews with medical or policy experts, and/or lung cancer survivors available upon request.

WHY: Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease here in Georgia and across America, killing 490,000 people nationally each year. The report not only grades states and the federal government but also identifies key actions for lawmakers to take to eliminate the death and disease caused by tobacco use.
