UWG’s The Other Night School Returns for Fall 2023
Monday, August 28th, 2023
The University of West Georgia’s The Other Night School will continue its eight-year legacy as an esteemed opportunity for exposure to lectures regarding eccentric subjects with its return in Fall 2023. A wide array of lectures, from medieval runestones to marvelous marble, are sure to satisfy the curiosity of numerous attendees. All are invited to the free events at UWG Newnan and the Carrollton Center for the Arts.
UWG’s School of the Arts (SOTA), directed by Dr. Chad Davidson, understood the need for enrichment in the lives of community members through easily accessible lectures from distinguished individuals involved in the arts. Community members can indulge in complimentary wine and invigorating speeches while celebrating literature, arts, natural and social sciences, and humanities.
“The Other Night School brings the best part of a college classroom out to the community while leaving behind those pesky term papers and finals,” said Davidson. “Riveting, thought-provoking lectures delivered by UWG's top professors and noted scholars from Atlanta to Birmingham, all for free. And don't forget the wine.”
SOTA will kick off these lecture events with Associate Professor of English Dr. Kevin Casper, exploring the “Anatomy of a Joke: The Rhetoric of Humor” on Tuesday, Aug. 29 at 6 p.m. at UWG Newnan as he unpacks the powerful, community-congealing, soul-uplifting and uncontrollable force of laughter. Margaret Mitchell, professor of English, will wrap up the series on Tuesday, Nov. 28 at 6 p.m. at UWG Newnan, delivering a lecture regarding Charles Dickens and how his classic story shaped the way we celebrate Christmas today.
While all lectures are free and open to the public, attendees are encouraged to reserve a spot via Eventbrite, which features the complete fall schedule. The Other Night School is made possible through the generosity of the Hollis Trust of Newnan, Georgia, and Milestone Investment Management of Carrollton, Georgia.
