New research from Emory University’s Goizueta Business School ranking the top NBA fans finds the league is more star-driven, integrated with popular culture, and social media-savvy than the rest of the sports world. This year, Goizueta’s “Fanalytics Rankings” show the LA Lakers with the number one fan base in the NBA while the Minnesota Timberwolves have the lowest rating.

The Lakers are a team with a strong celebrity following that spills into popular culture and social media, all traits that help create fandom with younger consumers. As with most sports leagues, attracting younger fans while working to keep older fans is a constant struggle for teams. Understanding the power of the brand and fan loyalty in the NBA is very much a look at the past and future of American sports fandom.

The Emory Marketing Analytics Center and Professor Michael Lewis have analyzed fan bases across the major American sports leagues for a decade.

“Fandom is important to track because it provides insight across cultures and gives us a gauge on cultural engagement as a whole,” says Mike Lewis, Professor of Marketing, Goizueta Business School at Emory University. “Fandom is about social identity through cultural engagement. People feel valued by belonging to a larger community.”

The 2022 NBA team with the most passionate fan following is the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers are followed by the Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, Chicago Bulls, and Boston Celtics. At the other extreme, The Minnesota Timberwolves score at the bottom of our list. Other struggling NBA brands include the Hornets, Pelicans, Grizzlies, and Wizards.
