Changing technologies is progress but disrupts the engineering profession as well as the lives of consumers. People adapt to all sorts of new products and services; electronics, medical devices, transportation, entertainment, communication and more. It’s progress with disruptions; cell phones become obsolete, products of years past are no longer available, common skills like making change are no longer taught, Blockbusters and other well-known companies are gone. Most people, including many engineers, are not aware of the disruptions and consequences that are coming to the engineering community.

John will introduce and update the society members on the coming disruption to the engineering profession and its practices from the Internet of Things, Industry 4.0 and Smart Manufacturing.

·         Precision and quality expectations will lead to increased measurement and instrumentation. 

·         Systems thinking will replace product thinking and will lead to greater data integration. 

·         How the user experiences these technologies will lead to smart interface developments. 

·         Scale of operations and remote technologies will necessitate infrastructure and higher security. 

·         Consideration of asset lifecycles will create appetite for more engineering insights and intelligence. 

Using case studies, he will illustrate these drivers in today’s society and encourage reflection on both the consequences and the opportunities for today’s Engineering professionals. 

The face to face gathering will start at 6:00, the online presentation will start at 7:00. Online participants will be able to use the chat feature to pose questions during the live presentation. The meeting presentation will be recorded and available for later viewing at no cost. This presentation, like the previous presentations, will qualify for a required engineering professional development hour (PDH). Currently registered professional engineers, those engineers aspiring to become PEs, and others engaged in engineering would benefit from the presentation. Anyone in the field of engineering and members of the general public are welcomed pose discussion topics and to learn about engineering and public welfare.

John Whitten is an experienced leader for the development and application of technology to improve industrial equipment and processes including monitoring, protection, safety, control, analysis, and diagnostics through Industrial Automation and Internet of Things. As an entrepreneur, he helps clients with program and project management and consults on innovation in emerging technologies such as industrial automation, internet of things and smart manufacturing. He is a certified Project Management Professional and has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Tulsa.
