Senator David Perdue: Savannah Port Project On Track For Completion
Wednesday, August 26th, 2020
U.S. Senator David Perdue (R-GA) recently visited the Port of Savannah and toured a working dredge to get a firsthand look at progress on the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project (SHEP). Once completed, the port will be able to accommodate larger, Post-Panamax ships and will contribute an additional $282 million to the economy every year.
Working with the Trump Administration, Senator Perdue and the Georgia congressional delegation have secured full federal funding for SHEP for four straight years, putting the project on track for completion after nearly 20 years of delays.

“Georgia’s got a great infrastructure project right here with a 7.3 return on every dollar. We spent about a billion dollars, about half state and half federal, and we’ve got a 7 to 1 return on this. That’s a tremendous return on investment, and we’re within 15 or 16 months of being finished with this thing after 20 years.”
The Port of Savannah recently became the top U.S. port for agriculture exports. Yesterday, it was announced that the port also exported more loaded containers than any other port in the country from January through May 2020.
