GPB and the Georgia Forestry Foundation Launch MAKE THAT PAPER: CAREERS IN FORESTRY
Thursday, July 9th, 2020
GPB Education and the Georgia Forestry Foundation (GFF) have joined forces to launch MAKE THAT PAPER: CAREERS IN FORESTRY, a scenario-based educational game that teaches students about working forests and real-world forestry jobs by simulating workplace scenarios and testing forestry industry knowledge.
As Georgia’s leading digital learning content provider, all of GPB Education’s original resources are available for free to educators and students across the state and meet state standards.
"We are proud to offer students and teachers a new learning resource with Make That Paper," says Laura Evans, GPB's Director of Education. "This no-cost digital game is engaging, but most importantly it teaches students valuable workplace and decision-making skills."
Make That Paper encourages students to take on the role of a manager in three different forestry industry career tracks. Objectives include maintaining sustainable, efficient and successful management of the forest and production of forest products and using best practices when hiring and managing staff.
Student players are first given the task of hiring a new employee for a position which varies depending on the career path being played. Players work through this process a total of three times, once for each career path.
The player is provided with a description of the job responsibilities and requirements, as well as three emailed cover letters with attached resumes from three candidates. Some characters are more suited for the jobs they are applying for than others, and it is up to the player to compare and hire the best candidate. Some characters have more experience, while others are new to the industry but have training in important skills.
“We are honored to partner again with GPB to deliver cutting edge educational resources that connect students to Georgia’s natural resources and the careers that sustain them,” said GFF President & CEO Andres Villegas. “Working forests are critical to the daily lives of all our state’s citizens and are an important engine in Georgia’s economy that sustain 148,000 jobs. Whether you have a GED or a PhD, there are many rewarding careers in Georgia’s sustainable forest sector.”
Make That Paper: Careers in Forestry is aligned to CTAE and Forestry Management Georgia Standards of Excellence. It also includes game play instructions and instructional support for teachers. The new game is part of an ongoing partnership between GPB Education and GFF to offer standards-aligned educational resources for 3rd -12th grade that can be found at gpb.org/forests.
