2019 ACT results released this week showed that Coweta County School System students overall outscored the nation on the college entrance exam.

The school system’s average composite ACT score was 21.2 among its 2019 graduates, compared to an overall national composite score of 20.8 and a Georgia composite score of 21.4.

Coweta high schools’ results placed the school system in the top 13 percent of Georgia school districts in terms of ACT performance.

The ACT is a national college admissions examination that measures what students learn in high school to determine their academic readiness for college. ACT results are accepted by all four-year colleges and universities in the U.S.

The ACT results released this week were for test-takers who graduated in 2019. 908 Coweta County’s students – about 55% of Coweta’s 2019 graduating class – took the exam. The Coweta County School System had the 11^th highest number of ACT test-takers in Georgia in 2019.

Coweta County Schools, overall, outscored the national ACT Composite score, as well as the national averages for the exam’s English, Reading, and Science sections, and tied the national Math section composite score.

The Coweta County School System had the highest ACT performance in the West Georgia RESA district, and was the 23^rd highest-scoring district in Georgia, placing the school system in the top 13 percent of Georgia school districts.

Coweta County high schools also performed well.  Northgate and Newnan High Schools outscored national averages, and East Coweta High School tied the national ACT average.

2019 ACT test results for the Coweta County School System’s three high schools, system, state and nation, by composite score and subject test, are in the chart below. The ACT Composite is the exam’s overall score, which combines the ACT’s four subject tests (English, Mathematics, Reading and Science):

“Our ACT results provide yet another data point for us as we examine student performance,” said Superintendent Steve Barker.  “Our students continue to perform well in comparison to the nation”

Barker noted that the Coweta County School System’s high school block scheduling structure allows students to take 32 courses over four years of high school, compared to 24 courses taken by students in many school systems that use a traditional high school schedule. That provides students more opportunities to take advanced content during their high school career.

“Our ACT results, along with other measures like the SAT, CCRPI and our graduation rate, reflect a strong instructional program,” said Barker. “The hard work of our teachers and students is appreciated, as is the support of our parents and community stakeholders,” said Barker.

Georgia’s average composite score of 21.4 was higher, for the fourth consecutive year, than the national average. Georgia also outperformed the nation in English, Reading, Science and Math on the ACT.
