Georgia DOT Quick Response Project to Install an RCUT Intersection at Georgia 74 and Kedron Drive
Wednesday, October 23rd, 2019
Georgia DOT crews will start a Quick Response project to install an Reduced Conflict U-Turn (RCUT) intersection at Georgia 74/Joel Cowan Parkway and Kedron Drive on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2019, weather permitting. The entire project should be complete within 90 days.
The crews may periodically close a lane of traffic around the work zone for safety. These closures may occur at any time from Wednesday, Oct. 23 through Saturday, Nov. 30, 2019, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., except for Sundays. Motorists in the area should watch for signage indicating a lane closure, slow their speeds through the work zone, and be alert to the workers and their equipment.
A Reduced Conflict U-Turn (RCUT) intersection is installed to reduce angle collisions at an intersection involving a divided highway. A specially-shaped median is constructed to prevent dangerous left turns or straight-through traffic. Those motorists will then instead turn right into the flow of traffic and may utilize a designated down-road U-turn that keeps them driving within the flow of traffic as they maneuver to where they need to go. RCUTs decrease congestion by allowing traffic to flow through the area in all directions, yet they reduce opportunities for collisions by keeping all motorists within the flow of traffic. Nationally, intersections that have installed RCUTs have seen a 70 percent reduction in fatal crashes and a 42 percent reduction in injury accidents.
When: Starting Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2019, to be completed within 90 days
Where: The intersection of Georgia 74/Joel Cowan Parkway and Kedron Drive, north of Peachtree City in Fayette County, Georgia
