Georgia Power employees donated $500 to help provide After School Program (ASP) scholarships to financially struggling families of students in the Fayette County Public School System.

ASP operates on site in all of the county’s 14 elementary schools. The program begins immediately after the school day ends and offers homework assistance, mentoring, and classes and clubs in languages, science, technology, engineering, math, crafts, and dozens of other subjects. The program provides a safe, secure and nurturing environment for students, and peace of mind for working parents who cannot be home when their children out of school.  

The $500 check was donated by the Metro South Citizens of Georgia Power, a group of employees on the south side of Atlanta who fundraise and volunteer in the communities in which they work and live. William Maddox, a senior transmission line maintenance engineer for Georgia Power, presented the check to ASP Director Sharon Walters. Maddox is also treasurer and past president of the Metro South Citizens of Georgia Power.

Maddox is very familiar with the ASP and its importance to families who rely on it. He has first-hand knowledge about the program since his wife, Kelly, is an ASP itinerant aide at Robert J. Burch Elementary. He also spends a lot of time volunteering in Fayette’s schools by bringing “Power Town” to ASP classes. Power Town is a model city with live electricity that is used to demonstrate how electricity works and how to be safe around it.
