Monday, December 3rd, 2018
It has a been year of accomplishments for two-time University of West Georgia alumnus and Georgia State Senator Mike Dugan.
Not only was Dugan recently reelected for a fourth term and subsequently selected majority leader of the Georgia State Senate, he has also received recognition as Legislator of the Year by multiple statewide associations. Each honor highlights issues the statesman holds critical to his mission as a legislator.
The Georgia State Firefighters Association and the Georgia Association of Fire Chiefs honored Dugan, who serves as the secretary of the Senate Public Safety Committee.
The Georgia Chamber of Commerce also acknowledged Dugan for his pro-business legislation and dedication to economic growth through his work as chairman of the Senate Economic Development and Tourism Committee.
Dugan, who was recently appointed as chairman of the Senate Study Committee on the Excessive and Duplicative Regulatory Oversight of Community Based Intellectual and Developmental Disability (IDD) Services, was also recognized as legislator of the year by the Service Providers Association for Developmental Disabilities.
A retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army, Dugan was presented with a fourth recognition by the Retired Military Officers Association.
“Senator Dugan is a true public servant and statesman, and the culmination of awards he has received is a testament to his leadership and accomplishments,” said Russell Crutchfield, associate vice president and chief of staff to UWG President Dr. Kyle Marrero.
Dugan represents the 30th district, which includes Carrollton and Carroll County and portions of Douglas and Paulding counties.
Dugan – a 1986 and 1989 graduate of then-West Georgia College – received his degrees in history and organizational development, respectively, and is a longtime supporter of his alma mater and its students.
“He’s a mentor to so many in the community, and he is always available to speak with students and to give advice,” Crutchfield recalled. “You can find him and his amazing wife and alumna, Missy, cheering on the UWG Wolves football team at every game. We are very thankful for the Dugan family.”
“Senator Dugan’s efforts have made an outstanding impact on our community and our state,” said Marrero. “He has dedicated most of his professional life to public servitude. We are especially fortunate for his guidance, support and friendship to UWG, and we congratulate him on these well-earned awards.”
