West Georgia Technical College has hired Todd Davis to become the school’s new athletic director.

Davis officially began his role on July 1, replacing Todd Pratt, who left last year to manage the Single A Greenboro Grasshoppers in the Florida Marlins organization.

“We are very excited to have someone of the caliber of Todd Davis to lead our athletic department,” said West Georgia Tech President Steve G. Daniel. “Athletics plays an integral role in the branding of our college. All four of our sports teams are strong and competitive, and all produce quality student-athletes across the board. I am confident that Davis’ leadership will help make us even stronger in the years to come.”

Originally from Oklahoma, Davis has more than 25 years as an athletic administrator. He has been an athletic director for 20 of those 25 years and has a knack for building highly competitive sports programs.

“I want to thank President Daniel and Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Tonya Whitlock for this opportunity,” Davis said. “I’m excited to be at West Georgia Tech and back in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association. I look forward to building a relationship with our student-athletes, coaches, faculty, staff and the community.”

Davis will oversee an athletic department with four sports – men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball and softball.

The Golden Knights compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association, as a member of the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association conference.

Baseball and softball are NJCAA Division-I programs, while men’s basketball and women’s basketball compete on the Division-III level.

Davis is no stranger to the state of Georgia, as he has directed two different institutions in athletics.

As athletic director at Gordon State College (2007-15), he oversaw six sports and led the Highlanders to their best year in school history in 2011-12. Three teams – men’s basketball, softball, baseball – all qualified for their respective national championship.

His accomplishments at GSC alone include 17 Academic All-Americans, five NJCAA Academic Team of the Year qualifiers, 52 All-Region selections and two NJCAA All-Americans.

Davis also spent three years as athletic director at Darton State College in Albany. In his second year, the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association named the school the top two-year athletic program in the state for 2005-06.

Overall, Davis has seen three national championships, one NJCAA runner-up title, three national top-five finishes, six College World Series baseball appearances, seven NJCAA All-Americans and 15 region titles.

“My goal for any athletic program I direct is to make it competitive on the national level and make sure all student-athletes understand the importance of obtaining an education,” Davis said. “I’m proud to have witnessed 64 Academic All-Americans during my career, and I look forward to seeing that number continue to rise.”

Davis is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in health and sports science.

Davis comes from a very athletic family, as his older brother, Steve, was the starting quarterback at the University of Oklahoma from 1973-75. The Sooners won two national championships with Steve Davis at the helm.

Davis is married to his wife, Susie, of 27 years and has three children, Drew (21), Brooks (19) and Macy (16).
