The number of IT jobs grew 0.1 percent sequentially last month to 5,293,000, according to TechServe Alliance, the national trade association of the IT & Engineering Staffing and Solutions industry. On a year-over-year basis, IT employment grew by 3.3% since May 2016 adding 170,400 IT workers.

Engineering employment increased by 0.1 percent sequentially to 2,558,300.  On a year-over-year basis, growth in engineering employment increased by 1.1% since May 2016 or 27,800 engineering workers.

"Both IT and engineering job growth slowed in May," stated Mark Roberts, CEO of TechServe Alliance. "Given record low unemployment rates, the slow down is largely attributable to the shortage of talent in many high-demand skill sets. We are concerned that some of the legislative and administrative policy proposals on immigration would further restrict the already tight labor supply in many IT and engineering occupations causing work to be pushed offshore---an undesirable outcome for U.S. firms and workers," added Roberts.
