You might be surprised to find Georgia relies on federal aid a lot more than most states.

The nonpartisan Tax Foundation ranked the states according to how much federal aid they got in 2013, the most recent data year available.

Georgia was seventh highest among the states, relying on federal assistance for 37.3 percent of its revenue in fiscal 2013.

Federal aid includes “Medicaid payments, education funding assistance, support for infrastructure projects, housing grants, and more,” Tax Foundation noted. “Federal grants-in-aid to state and local governments have reached $600 billion per year, with Medicaid by far the largest (and most rapidly growing) component.”
