Georgia Lawmakers Eyeing Legal Protections for Spaceport
Friday, January 15th, 2016
A planned spaceport in southeastern Georgia could be as noisy as it wants, and space tourists wouldn’t be able to sue for injuries under legislation introduced in the General Assembly this week.
A bill sponsored by Georgia Rep. Jason Spencer. R-Woodbine, would prohibit local governments from putting noise control restrictions on any space flight operations in Georgia. Also, space flight operators, whether affiliated with a government agency or a private aerospace contractor, could not be sued by non-employees – including future space tourists – for injuries or other damages unless they occur from an intentional act of the operator or from gross negligence.
The proposed spaceport would be built in Camden County, Ga., along the Interstate 95 corridor at the site of a former rocket testing facility. Spencer represents Camden in the state House of Representatives.
