Piedmont Newnan Accredited By The Commission On Cancer Of The American College Of Surgeons
Wednesday, November 11th, 2015
Piedmont Newnan recently became part of a select group of cancer networks in the United States to be accredited by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS). The hospital has been granted a Three-Year Accreditation with Commendation.
To earn voluntary CoC accreditation, cancer programs must meet or exceed 34 CoC quality care standards, be evaluated every three years through a survey process, and maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive patient-centered care. Three-Year Accreditation with Commendation is only awarded to facilities that exceed standard requirements at the time of its triennial survey.
“At Piedmont Newnan, we take a very unique approach to treating cancer,” Dr. Vasily Assikis, medical oncologist at Piedmont Newnan, said. “We treat the person – not just the disease. We believe collaboration among multidisciplinary specialists is key to helping our patients achieve the best possible outcomes.”
When patients receive care at a CoC facility like Piedmont, they also have access to information on clinical trials and new treatments, genetic counseling, and patient centered services including psycho-social support, a patient navigation process, and a survivorship care plan that documents the care each patient receives and seeks to improve cancer survivors’ quality of life.
“Cancer treatment involves more than medical care,” Mike Robertson, Piedmont Newnan CEO, said. “That’s why we offer free support services and programs such as yoga, cooking demonstrations, expressive art classes and counseling to anyone affected by cancer through Thomas F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness at Piedmont.”
Like all CoC-accredited facilities, Piedmont maintains a cancer registry and contributes data to the National Cancer Data Base (NCDB), a joint program of the CoC and American Cancer Society. This nationwide oncology outcomes database is the largest clinical disease registry in the world. Data on all types of cancer are tracked and analyzed through the NCDB and used to explore trends in cancer care.
Currently, there are more than 1,500 CoC-accredited cancer programs in the United States and Puerto Rico, less than five percent of which are network programs. The CoC provides the public with information on the resources, services, and cancer treatment experience for each CoC-accredited cancer program through the CoC Hospital Locator.
