Already a decorated and award-winning college radio station, the WOLF Internet Radio at the University of West Georgia continues to bring in more accolades.

Recently, the station placed high in the College Media Association’s National Film and Audio Festival, held in Washington, D.C. The contest, open to all colleges and universities, had at least 150 entries of student-produced pieces for campus media outlets or college-credit courses.

Taking first and third places in the Best DJ Personality, the WOLF also took first and second places in the Audio Creative Division, with Ethan Orphe receiving second place for his podcast “Anistalgia.” This was a first for the WOLF, as it has only been creating podcasts for six months.

Orphe said that winning this award means a great deal to him as a student.

“Getting national recognition for my work only puts more fuel on the fire for my passion to create engaging content,” Orphe said.

Jordan Hall took third place in the Best DJ Personality category.

“I greatly appreciate the award,” Hall said. “It was shocking that I actually got it, but I feel like it was well-deserved.”

Taking first place in the Best DJ Personality category was Gabrielle Tigner, assistant program director for the WOLF.

“Know your worth at all times,” she said. “You bring the value that is recognized by the world.”

Tigner also had the honor of being selected to attend the prestigious 2019 International Radio and Television Society’s (IRTS) Multicultural Workshop in New York City.

Along with 120 attendees, selected from more than 500 applicants, she enjoyed panel discussions and networking opportunities with peers and professionals. Attendees also met with human resource professionals from 25 major communications companies such as Disney, Viacom, NBC and CBS.

In its 35th year, the IRTS Workshop was a two-day conference that continues to be singled out by human resource professionals as one of the best places to find skilled students and recent graduates of color for job and internship opportunities.

“By connecting with these professionals, I gained a better knowledge of companies outside the Atlanta market,” Tigner said. “I was able to come back and share knowledge and information with my peers who were unable to take advantage of the opportunity I had.”

These impressive accolades and awards are adding to the growing visibility and recognition that The WOLF Internet Radio received in the 2018-19 academic year.

Those awards include the 2018 College Radio Day Spirit of College Radio Award, the Intercollegiate Broadcasting Systems Golden Microphone Award, and student radio personality awards in several categories.

“There is so much talent in the UWG mass communications department,” Orphe concluded. “I believe the judges for awards like these are beginning to take notice.”
