For the third year in a row, the University of West Georgia has been named to the renowned Colleges of Distinction, an organization that recognizes institutions committed to individualized and engaging education.

UWG’s College of Education, Richards College of Business and Tanner Health System School of Nursing are each honored for the 2019-2020 academic year. UWG also was acknowledged for its work in career development.

“That Colleges of Distinction continues to recognize UWG’s consistent dedication to student excellence in business, education and nursing is a great honor,” said UWG Interim President Dr. Micheal Crafton. “It also serves as a testament to our innovative approaches to teaching and learning that culminate in the ultimate undergraduate experience.”

Colleges of Distinction’s selection process consists of detailed interviews and research regarding each institution’s freshman experience and retention efforts alongside its general education programs, career development, strategic plan, student satisfaction, and more. Schools are accepted on the basis that they adhere to the Four Distinctions: Engaged Students, Great Teaching, Vibrant Community, and Successful Outcomes.

“We are so proud to see the University of West Georgia walking the walk,” said Tyson Schritter, chief operating officer for Colleges of Distinction. “Colleges of Distinction knows that a truly valuable education can’t be measured by rank or reputation. Students learn and thrive best when they embrace hands-on learning in a vibrant, welcoming community. That’s why it’s so encouraging to find UWG take such an innovative approach with its curriculum: its High-Impact Educational Practices ensure that the undergraduate experience is worthwhile and unique.”

Career Development

For the first time, UWG was recognized for its commitment in helping students graduate prepared to enter the workforce. UWG’s Career Services provides unparalleled support throughout every stage of career exploration, development and application.

“I am absolutely honored that we have received such an award, and I really have to give all the recognition to my team,” said Jessica Nguyen, associate director of career development. “They are the ones putting in the hours and passion to build relationships and connections to students to help them successfully identify the right majors and career choices for them to be successful.”

Business

Globalization and the intricacies of modern business operations require effective communication and apt problem-solving strategies. The Richards College of Business keeps its future leaders adaptable as they grow alongside their industry.

“For the Richards College of Business to be recognized for a third consecutive year as a College of Distinction is very rewarding,” said Dr. Faye McIntyre, dean and Sewell Chair of Private Enterprise. “It is a testament to the hard work our faculty and staff put into their jobs every day. We are thrilled that their dedication to our students' success is being recognized outside of the University of West Georgia.”

To help develop the workforce of tomorrow, the Richards College of Business recently received funding for a new $15 million building, Roy Richards Sr. Hall. Included in the 67,000-square-foot facility will be a dozen classrooms ranging in sizes from a 24-seat seminar classroom to a 105-seat lecture hall; an expanded lab to serve management information systems students; and 13 collaborative learning spaces open for use by students, faculty and staff.

In addition to the traditional teacher education programs offered, COE also offers programs in the areas of leadership and wellness.
