Friday, September 22nd, 2017

A record setting number of students from Fayette’s middle and high schools have been selected as members of State School Superintendent Richard Woods’ 2017-2018 Student Advisory Council.

A total of four students from Flat Rock Middle, the most ever from a single Fayette middle school, and a student from McIntosh High and Whitewater High are among the 142 Georgia students chosen to serve on the council. The students are Christopher Floyd, Daniel Belcher, Jordan Thomas, and Tresea Borders, all from Flat Rock Middle, Derrick Buie, Jr. from Whitewater High, and Kate Cullen from McIntosh High.

Throughout the school year, the students will meet with Superintendent Woods to discuss the impact of state policies in the classroom. Members of the Student Advisory Council will also discuss other issues related to education, serve as the superintendent’s ambassadors to their respective schools, and participate in service projects to benefit schools and students.

Members were selected from a pool of more than 1,500 students who applied to serve on the council. Students were chosen based on the strength of their essay answers, which focused on their ideas for public education, as well as their community service experience.
